George Died in Paul's Home - says Reportadded Dec 19thA new twist in the mystery of where George Harrison died in Los Angeles last month has emerged with a local TV station reporting he passed away in a secluded Beverly Hills estate owned by ex-bandmate Paul McCartney. The Los Angeles affiliate of the UPN network, citing unnamed sources, reported Tuesday night that McCartney bought the Beverly Hills house from rock star Courtney Love six months ago and allowed Harrison to use it in the last days of his life. Harrison died on November 29. UPN News13 said that two weeks before Harrison's death, McCartney visited him and told him he could borrow the secluded home, which is tucked away behind a gated driveway. The home is located high above a tree-lined road near the UCLA Medical Centre where Harrison received cancer treatments in his last weeks of life, UPN News13 reported. Harrison died of cancer at what the media were told at the time was the home of a friend, security consultant Gavin de Becker who made the announcement that he had passed away. The official death certificate, however, listed an address which postal and other authorities have since said does not appear to exist. A Los Angeles police spokesman said no one had been charged with any offence over the elusive address, saying the practice was sometimes used by celebrities to avoid their place of death being besieged by fans or souvenir hunters. A Los Angeles attorney last week filed an official complaint over the accuracy of the death certificate because it listed an apparently non-existent address as his place of death. Attorney Gloria Allred said she lodged her complaint with the Los Angeles Police Department because the "integrity of public records is at stake." Police said it was not a crime to list a false address as long as there was no intent to defraud. A neighbour who lives on the tree-lined street where Harrison reportedly died told UPN 13 she could feel "emanations from across the street."

My Sweet Lord to be Re-Released on January 14thadded December 12thGeorge Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" will be re-released in January, 31 years after the song first topped the British charts, report Reuters. "We are releasing the single on January 14, with all proceeds going to charity," a spokesman said. "But we have no name for the charity yet." The single, which grabbed the number one UK chart position for five weeks in January and February 1971, was tipped for the Christmas number one slot when EMI announced its re-release last week. But a spokesman for EMI said on Wednesday the company had decided to delay the release until early 2002 in the name of good taste. "It takes time to get a record out," the spokesman said. "Rushing it out in time for Christmas could have been seen as bad taste." "My Sweet Lord" was the first number one single by a solo Beatle and appeared on Harrison's album "All Things Must Pass," which was digitally remastered and reissued earlier this year.

Paul McCartney to "play for peace" in Osloadded December 10thBeatle Paul McCartney said on Sunday he would "play for peace" in Oslo this week at a concert to mark the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize. "I have always felt that the strength of peace and love can give the world hope upon which to build our future," McCartney said in a statement. "Peace has long been the theme of many of my songs and although I believe that the world could not simply ignore the events of September 11, I remain a pacifist and am happy to play for peace," he added. McCartney has been mourning the death of fellow Beatle George Harrison who died on November 30 at the age of 58 after battling cancer. McCartney will perform songs from his new album, "Driving Rain," at the concert in Oslo on Tuesday to honour this year's Peace Prize recipients and celebrate the prize's centenary. U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the United Nations -- joint winners of the 2001 Peace Prize -- were due to receive the award at a ceremony in Oslo on Monday. Other artists performing at the concert will be Haitian-born rapper Wyclef Jean, R&B singer Anastacia, Australian pop star Natalie Imbruglia, U.S. band Destiny's Child, UK opera singer Russell Watson and a choir of 50 children from around the world.

George Now in CaliforniaGeorge Harrison relocated to the West Coast last week to be closer to family and friends after three weeks of intense cancer treatments at Staten Island University Hospital, a source close to Harrison told the Staten Island Advance.Goerge moved "from a private home in the hills of Staten Island" to "a private home in Beverly Hills" on Nov. 15, and was supposed to begin follow-up chemotherapy treatment at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. But the chemotherapy, the friend said, was never started and doctors in California have taken more of a wait-and-see approach with 58-year-old Harrison, who has an inoperable brain tumor and lung cancer. Though there is still no official word on his prognosis, Harrison was hospitalized at UCLA earlier this week with a low blood count and shortness of breath for a blood transfusion, the friend said. And his condition has apparently not improved much since he boarded a private jet at Newark Airport last week and left for what was then a mystery destination.

More Scares Regarding George's Healthadded November 9thMany rumours have been circulating in the last few days about George's health. In fact a rumour went around that he was already dead. However, although there has been much speculation, there has been little fact. Today I received two telephone calls from what I thought we reputable news organisations asking me for help in preparing tributes to George. Naturally, after receiving these calls I feared the worst. However it seems both of the organisations were just acting on the speculation and had no facts regarding George. However, as they say, there is no smoke without fire. It seems that George is, or has, been treated in a special cancer unit at the hospital in Statten Island, New York. We wish George well and hope he can be left in peace. All he needs is our love.

Paul McCartney to Play London Concertadded 8th NovemberPAUL MCCARTNEY will play a rare live show in LONDON at a limited capacity venue before the end of November, NME.COM has learned. The gig will be one of a number the former Beatle will undertake in the run-up to Christmas as promotion for new album 'Driving Rain'. Macca will also play similar sized venues - around 1,500 capacity - in a number of other major European cities. It is unclear if the shows will be used as fundraisers for the victims of the September 11 attacks. Macca organised the Concert For New York at Madison Square Garden in the city on October 20. And he also rush released the single 'Freedom', written in the aftermath of the attacks, last Monday (November 5). Proceeds will go to New York police and firemen. A venue for Macca 's London show has not yet been confirmed. One likely spot is the Astoria Theatre, with a capacity of around 2000. It was at the Astoria that U2played a landmark gig earlier this year at the beginning of their 'Elevation' world tour.

Paul McCartney Rush Releases Freedom as a Singleadded November 6thPaul McCartney says he is rushing out a second charity single to raise money for New York's emergency workers affected by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. His new song, "Freedom," which was well received when McCartney played it at the Concert for New York City last month, went on sale in the U.K. on November 5thby EMI -- a week after fellow charity single "From a Lover to a Friend" -- and a week later in the U.S. via Capitol. McCartney, who was in New York on the day of the attacks and witnessed some of the devastation, wrote "Freedom" at the suggestion of his fiancee, Heather Mills. He said today that the positive response after he played "Freedom" at the Oct. 20 tribute concert "caused a whole new ball game." "We hadn't reckoned on this demand for 'Freedom' but as that's what people want we're getting it out fast to try to raise money for the firefighters and police of New York," he said. "It is rather unusual to have two charity singles out within seven days of each other, but I think it is appropriate at this time because we all demand freedom." Proceeds from both singles will go to a fund set up by the Robin Hood Foundation, which benefits victims' families and the New York firefighters and police. As reported yesterday, the Concert for New York has so far raised more than $30 million for the fund. We also hear from Matt Hurwitz that Paul has made a new video to go with 'Freedom'

George Receiving More Cancer Treatment. It has been reported by many websites and media organisations that George is being treated for his cancer in New York. However this has not been confirmed officially by George or his spokesman so until it has we will not be giving out details here, especially as many previous reports on George have been inaccurate, or, at worst, totally made up. We believe that George should be able to get treatment in private

Health Chiefs Apologise to George Over StabbingHealth chiefs have apologised to George Harrison after an inquiry found significant failings in the care of a schizophrenic who nearly killed him.Hospital bosses have accepted they failed to assess and manage the mental health problems suffered by Michael Abram. The apology comes after the publication of a critical report commissioned by St Helens and Knowsley Health Authority. The document says the former heroin addict should have been placed on a care programme some 18 months before the attack in which he repeatedly stabbed the musician. And the authors of the report also condemned the decision to discharge Abram from Whiston Hospital a month before he attacked Harrison. The circumstances were, they said, "unacceptable and did not accord with hospital policy". However, the three-strong inquiry panel said they "did not believe that any of the professional staff involved in Michael Abram's care could have predicted the attack on Mr Harrison". The 35-year-old, from Huyton, Merseyside, was detained indefinitely in a secure hospital following a two-day trial in November last year. He was charged with the attempted murder of the former Beatle and his wife Olivia at the couple's Oxfordshire mansion. But the jury was told to acquit deluded Abram, who believed the Beatles were "witches", on the grounds that he was temporarily insane. Ken Sanderson, chief executive of St Helens and Knowsley Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "There is no doubt, with hindsight, that there were shortcomings in the mental health services we provided."

Milk and Honey Re-releasedadded Oct 23rdJOHN LENNON AND YOKO ONO's "MILK AND HONEY" ALBUM OF 1984 IS SET FOR REISSUE, DIGITALLY REMASTERED WITH PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED \ BONUS TRACKS AND EXCERPTS OF HIS FINAL INTERVIEW Release follows historic "Come Together" all-star tribute concert, broadcast live from New York to benefit victims of September 11th events Expanded edition of album set for October 23rd in-store date, follow-up to last year's reissues of "Imagine," "Plastic Ono Band" and "Double Fantasy" albums The long-awaited reissue of the 1984 album MILK AND HONEY by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, in a digitally remastered, newly-expanded edition (with three bonus tracks and exclusive interview material) has been set for October 23rd in-store date on Capitol Records, it was announced today. The release comes two weeks after the once-in-a-lifetime all-star benefit tribute concert televised live from New York in honor of rock and roll's greatest working-class hero, a concert that still reverberates in the hearts of audiences across North America. MILK AND HONEY, comprised of individual songs by John and Yoko, as well as collaborations by the couple, stands in rock history as the only original LP to be posthumously released after Lennon's tragic death of December 8, 1980, containing songs he worked on that year. The bulk of John and Yoko's final recordings together recordings were first heard on the classic 1980 album, Double Fantasy, which was reissued worldwide by Capitol Records and EMI (in a newly-expanded, digitally remastered edition) on October 9, 2000, the day that would have been John Lennon's 60th birthday. The new commemorative edition of MILK AND HONEY reprises the track sequence of the original album, which was originally issued by Polygram in 1984, and has been out-of-print for more than a decade. As on Double Fantasy, John and Yoko are heard taking turns on lead vocals on alternate tracks throughout the album, opening with John on "I'm Stepping Out," followed by: "Sleepless Night" (Yoko), "I Don't Wanna Face It" (John), "Don't Be Scared" (Yoko), "Nobody Told Me" (John; a hit single that reached #5 in the U.S. and #6 in England), "O'Sanity" (Yoko), "Borrowed Time" (John), "Your Hands" (Yoko), "(Forgive Me) My Little Flower Princess" (John), "Let Me Count The Ways" (Yoko), "Grow Old With Me" (John), and "You're The One" (Yoko). In addition, the new CD of MILK AND HONEY will feature three bonus tracks: "Every Man Has A Woman Who Loves Him," John's vocal of Yoko's song from Double Fantasy (this rare track previously included on the limited-edition 1990 boxed-set, Lennon); "I'm Stepping Out," a previously unreleased home recording by John, of MILK AND HONEY's opening track; "I'm Moving On," a previously unreleased home recording sung by Yoko. MILK AND HONEY concludes with audio excerpts from the final interview given by John Lennon - taped just hours before he was killed - in which he is clearly upbeat about life, recording and the prospect of once again touring. The historic reissue was digitally remastered at Sterling Sound by George Marino. The CD booklet will include song lyrics and 14 new and rare photographs.

George Recording Again - in Collaboration with Jools Hollandadded 17th OctoberGeorge Harrison has returned to recording after his recent cancer scare. He has performed a new song with Jools Holland. George co-wrote the song, called A Horse To Water, with his son Dhani. It also seems George hasn't lost his dry sense of humour - the song has a publishing credit to RIP Ltd 2001. Pianist Holland - who presents the Later show on BBC2 - and singer Sam Brown are understood to have headed to Harrison's villa in Switzerland little over a fortnight ago to record the track. He said: "George and I worked together on Mr Road Runner (a Channel 4 documentary about blues) and we become good friends. Years later I interviewed George, Paul and Ringo for the Beatles Anthology documentary and George and I had regular cups of tea together. "George suggested we do a track and this finally happened this month. It was wonderful to work with one of the great, legendary artists in the world." Holland recorded with a string of stars, including Paul Weller, Jamiroquai and Eric Clapton, for the album Small World Big Band to be released on November 19.

Yoko Pleas For Peaceadded 26th SeptemberThe full-page ad in The New York Times carried a simple message: `Imagine all the people living life in peace.' The John Lennon lyric, carried on page 29 of Sunday's paper, was a message from his widow, Yoko Ono, in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, her spokesman confirmed Tuesday. The eight-word quotation from Lennon's `Imagine' was unaccompanied by any photos or text. Ono decided not to sign the ad because `she felt it would be more effective if her name wasn't on it,' explained spokesman Eliot Mintz. `This is one of the ways she makes her feelings known,' Mintz said. `The message is in the ad.' Ono, 68, also plans to erect a Times Square-area billboard with another message from Lennon's lyrics: `Give peace a chance.' Webmasters Note - In Strawberry Field - the peace garden in Central Park to commemorate John, is a plaque listing the countries that donated towards the park. Top of the list is - Afghanistan.

Geoffrey Giulliano Alive and Welladded 25th SeptemberIt seems the report of the death of Geoffrey Giulliano in the World Trade Centre was a sick hoax. The hoax was started by someone using Giulliano's publisher's e-mail address who sent messages to many Beatles websites that Giulliano had died. However it seems now that the reports were untrue and according to Giulliano were sent by someone who had a grudge. However, if that is the case - how did they get hold of his e-mail address. I hope this wasn't some sick publicity stunt.

Paul McCartney to Stage New York Benefit Concert for Firefightersadded 21st SeptemberPAUL McCARTNEY is to stage a benefit concert in New York next month in aid of the city's firefighters. Paul, who has been in New York since The World Trade Center disaster, announced the benefit show today (Friday) on New York's WPLJ radio station. Said Paul: "I was here in New York when the disaster happened. I was actually on a plane, on the tarmac, when the pilot said it'd all been closed down. I've been here in New York ever since and, in a way, I was pleased to be here to witness all the heroism. At the time of the disaster I was flying home in order to plan a concert that I was going to do in Russia, in Red Square in October. But that doesn't seem appropriate now, so I've postponed that. But what I am going to do is to do a concert here in New York within the next month to benefit all the firemen. I also have a connection there, because my father was a fireman in Liverpool during World War II. Anyway, we are looking at venues in New York now to do this benefit concert next month. Paul added: I'd also just like to take a second to say to all the people of New York - God bless everyone and good luck to us all and thanks to all of the heroes and heroines who've been helping with the situation. During World War II, Paul's father Jim McCartney was a volunteer fireman in Liverpool. Between August 1940 and January 1942, Liverpool endured 68 air-raids, which killed or injured more than 4,500 of the population and completely destroyed more that 10,000 homes in the city.

US Radio Chain Deny Banning Beatles Songs in the Wake of the Attacks on Americaadded September 20thThe largest chain of radio stations in the US has denied banning songs from its affiliated stations in the wake of the attacks on the US. But Clear Channel Radio admitted to circulating a list of around 150 songs which its stations might avoid playing because they could cause offence. There was criticism of the list after it was posted on various web sites. The list included John Lennon's Imagine, Ticket To Ride by The Beatles, Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel and What A Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong. In a statement, the San Antonio, Texas-based radio station chain said that contrary to some reports it had not banned any songs from any of its radio stations. 'Each programme director and general manager must take the pulse of his or her market to determine if play lists should be altered, and if so, for how long,' the statement said.

John Lennon, singer/songwriter/artist, was a founder of the world's most famous and popular band: The Beatles. Lennon met avant-garde composer/artist, filmmaker, Yoko Ono in 1966. They married in 1969, and together, expressed their stand for Peace & Love through their highly original, and well- publicized works, influencing many to do the same. They also co-produced such memorable records as the single ``Give Peace A Chance'' and albums such as John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Imagine and Double Fantasy. Lennon's life was taken on December 8, 1980. Although he would be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, John Lennon will always be remembered as more than a musician.

Audio of Beatles' Juke Box Jury Appearance Given to BBCadded 17 SeptemberA lost 1960s audio recording of The Beatles playfully reviewing rock and roll singles and chatting about Elvis Presley on a television program has been presented to the British Broadcasting Corporation. The recording of John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison speaking on a December 1963 broadcast of the BBC's ''Juke Box Jury'' was made by a viewer using reel-to-reel tape, the broadcaster said on Sunday. A BBC spokeswoman said the tape was not of broadcast quality, but was `marvelous to have.'The BBC said it would try to match the recording with a silent film of the same program from its archives. On the show, which featured a panel of guests who picked pop songs as either `hits' or `misses,' the Beatles reviewed new singles by artists including the Swinging Blue Jeans and their early hero, Elvis Presley. `I love his voice and I love all the records like 'Blue Suede Shoes', but I don't like the songs now,'' Paul McCartney sniffed at Elvis's `Kiss Me Quick'' on the tape. A young George Harrison added: `Elvis is great but the songs are not for me.' But the `Fab Four' correctly predicted the song would be a chart hit. John Lennon was upbeat about `I Could Write A Book' by The Chance: `It's right good that one, it's the bestest gear, that's the sound boys,' he said through the screams of fans, who drowned out the world's biggest pop band through much of the recording. But both song and band failed to make a mark on the charts. The BBC, which recorded few early broadcasts of `Juke Box Jury,' has appealed to those who might have captured early broadcasts on tape to rummage through their attics.

Attack on America - a Personal ViewLike almost everyone around the world I was stunned by the events of last Tuesday. I had just returned home from hospital after a minor operation feeling very sore and sorry for myself. I turned the TV on and all thoughts of myself changed completely. At first I thought I was watching 'Independence Day' but then the realisation it was actually happening hit me hard.It is times like this I really miss Esther. Of course, she was American and would have been absolutely horrified by the scenes in her homeland. However I'm also sure she would not be out for revenge on the terrorists, but would want a measured response to ensure they were brought to justice. America and her allies must not commit acts of terrorism to avenge the terrorism commited in America. Two wrongs do not make a right. The world has changed completely due to the events of Tuesday - however, America's response to those events could have an even greater affect. If America and its allies, including Britain, goes in all guns blazing and wipes out everything that gets in its way it runs the risk of provoking a war the likes of which make the Gulf War look like a little squabble. It also worries me that all Muslims will be regarded as the enemy. This would be unjust. It is totally against Muslim law to kill innocent people. It should also be said there are fanatics and terrorists in other religions too. Terrorists have been killing innocent people in the name of religion in Northern Ireland for decades - and they call themselves Christian. Imagine all the people sharing all the world

St Peter's Church Hall Hit By Arson Attackadded 17th SeptemberA LOCKED green door was all that prevented the historic church hall where John Lennon first met Paul McCartney from being destroyed by fire. The fire badly damaged an annexe room, but the main part of the hall, including the stage where Lennon performed with his band The Quarrymen on that fateful day 44 years ago, escaped the flames. The door linking the two rooms was partly burned through, but kept the worst of the flames at bay, so the hall suffered only smoke damage. The Rector of St Peter's, Cannon John Roberts, said: 'Luckily the door was closed otherwise the whole building would have gone up. 'The fire brigade reckon that within another 20 minutes the whole lot would have gone up in flames.' The church had been planning to refurbish the church hall, a project which included the removal of the famous stage. The church is likely to sell the Fab Four landmark at auction. But Liverpool council is hoping to keep the stage in the city as a tourist attraction. Cannon Roberts added: 'We have been given the go-ahead to get the best price for the stage. We are legally obliged to sell it. We can't give it away. 'We have 450 people who use the hall each week, and we need the space that a modernised hall will give us. The refurbishment will still go ahead.'

George Denies Cancer Death Storiesadded 23rd JulyBeatle George Harrison and his wife issued a written statement Monday denying published reports that he was close to death after recent treatment for cancer. The English newspaper the Daily Mail on Sunday said Harrison had told his friend and former Beatles producer George Martin " that he does not have long to live. The newspaper quoted Martin as saying: "He is taking it easy and hoping that the thing will go away. He has an indomitable spirit but he knows that he is going to die soon and he is accepting that." The Harrison statement used strong language to deny the Daily Mail's story: "We are disappointed and disgusted by the report," it said. "It was unsubstantiated, untrue and totally uncalled for , when in fact Mr. Harrison is active and feeling very well. It has caused untold distress amongst our family and friends. The original 'story' was conjured up by the National Enquirer, the Globe and the Daily Mail." Also Adam Sharp of George Martin Music told ABCNEWS that George Martin did not make comments attributed to him by the Mail on Sunday. Sharp told Good Morning America that Martin has not discussed the health of George Harrison with anyone, and that he did not make the comments attributed to him in the Mail. Sharp did not say whether Martin was considering legal action against the tabloid.
George Harrison 'close to death' Says George Martinadded july 22ndBeatle George Harrison has admitted that he expects to die soon from cancer. The 58-year-old has been treated for a brain tumour at a clinic in Switzerland, having already undergone an operation for lung cancer earlier this year. Harrison made the emotional confession that he does not have long to live to close friend and former Beatles producer Sir George Martin. Sir George told The Mail on Sunday: 'He is taking it easy and hoping that the thing will go away. He has an indomitable spirit but he knows that he is going to die soon and he is accepting that.' Harrison received cobalt ray treatment from Switzerland's leading cancer specialists at the Sainta Giovanni Hospital in Bellinzona after it was discovered that he was suffering from brain cancer last month. At the time, the star put on a brave face, telling fans: 'I am feeling fine. God bless, and not to worry.' But Sir George, dubbed the Fifth Beatle, revealed Harrison is now facing up to the prospect of death. 'George is very philosophical. He does realise that everybody has got to die sometime,' said Sir George. 'He has been near death many times and he's been rescued many times as well. But he knows that he is going to die soon and he's accepting it perfectly happily.' |

Beatlemania - Nature or Nurtureadded July 21stFirstly I should apologise for not being as up to date with the news as usual. I have a very good excuse though. A couple of weeks ago I was sitting in Soho Square before my Beatles walk when I received a call on my mobile from my mother. Now, I can hear you all saying, 'So What' - well, This was the first time I ever spoke to my mother - I was put up for adoption at birth. I've longed since thought about tracking my birth mother and finally got the courage. I went down to meet her last week - along with my half brothers, uncle, nieces and nephews. It's been quite a week. What's all this do with The Beatles - well, not much, but this is my website so I'll write what I want. Actually there is some connection because my mother is a Beatles fan. She saw them in concert in 1963. Now I know where my Beatlemania came from. I know my 'new' family read this site so a special hello and welcome to you all.

George Harrison Cancer Scare - Latest Newsadded 21st JulySoon after the original cancer scare reports surfaced, George released a statement saying 'Dear Friends and Fans, George Harrison would like it to be known that he is feeling fine, is not in the hospital and is sorry for any disturbance the press may have caused. Please do not worry.' The statement released by his lawyers also said doctors do not see any need for further treatment at the hospital, Ananova reported. Swiss cancer specialist Franco Cavalli, quoted by the Associated Press, said 'Mr. George Harrison was referred to the hospital to undergo a course of radiotherapy. Harrison successfully completed this course more than a month ago and we foresee no need for further treatment here.' It is interesting to note that none of the official press statements mention anything about a brain tumour. It should also be mentioned that radiotherapy is certainly one of treatments given after a tumour is removed from the lung. If you would like to send a get well card to George they should be sent to Apple at 27 Ovington Square, London, SW3 1LJ, England
George Being Treated For Cancer at Swiss Clinicadded 9th JulyGeorge Harrison, who recently underwent surgery for cancer, is being treated in a Swiss cancer clinic, CNN are reporting Dr Franco Cavalli, director of the oncology institute for southern Switzerland in Bellinzona, confirmed the news to the UK's Press Association on Sunday. Dr Cavalli said: "For two weeks the local press have been publishing the news that he is being treated at our institute, and we have not denied that. "That is all we have to say for the time being. "We expect to issue a press release tomorrow (Monday) morning." Earlier, the Sonntagszeitung newspaper said Harrison had rented a house in Luino in Italy, a 40-minute drive from Bellinzona, during the treatment. Reuters said the newspaper report claimed Harrison received cobalt radiation. In May, Harrison, 58, underwent surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, to remove a cancerous growth from one of his lungs. A statement from his solicitor said the operation had been completely successful and he had made an excellent recovery. Harrison, who was also treated for throat cancer in 1997, had his first surgery that year, followed by two courses of radiation therapy at the Royal Marsden Hospital, Britain's leading cancer treatment centre. The Sonntagszeitung newspaper in Switzerland are reporting that George is being treated for a brain tumour.

Paul Attends LIPA Graduation in Liverpooladded 21st JulyPaul McCartney attended the graduation ceramony of the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts on July 20th. During the ceremony Paul McCartney paid tribute to three musicians by making them LIPA Companions. Those honoured included former Sex Pistols manager, Malcolm McClaren, songstress Joan Armatrading and lyricist Benny Gallagher. Sir Paul was bestowed the honour in recognition of the regular work all three artists carry out at the school, which was founded by McCartney in 1996. Before the ceremony Paul McCartney paid tribute to the work of human rights group Amnesty International during a visit to his old grammar school, now converted to LIPA. Sir Paul was helping to promote the book Like Water On Stone - The Story of Amnesty International, which was written by his former schoolmate Jonathan Power. Paul had befriended new boy Power by buying him an ice lolly and inviting him to join him for an illicit cigarette. After the school closed, McCartney paid for the grand building to be transformed into the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, which opened in 1996. Speaking to a small gathering of Mr Power's family and Amnesty colleagues, Sir Paul thanked the organisation for its 40 years of campaigning. He said: "I would really like to thank Amnesty for being there for us all. "There are so many injustices that would go un-noticed but by putting the spotlight on them, they are brought to the attention of the world and the people are released. "When we were growing up Nelson Mandela was in prison and now he is a free man who was president of his country. To see things like that is very moving and I would like to thank everyone involved." Jonathan Power said: "Between us we have had 40 years of righting wrongs and 40 years of writing songs. Today I think the world is a better place for them both."

Yoko Renames Liverpool Airport 'John Lennon Airport'added July 2ndYoko Ono has unveiled the new logo for the rebranding of Liverpool Airport which is to take the name of her late husband. It will be renamed Liverpool John Lennon Airport in spring 2002 when its new terminal is opened. Ono said the former Beatle would have been very 'proud' to have had such an honour bestowed upon him. The logo features the slogan 'Above us only skies' taken from his classic hit Imagine. Liverpool John Lennon Airport will be the first UK airport to be named after an individual. Ono was presented with a scaled down version of the 7ft 6in statue of Lennon which will be a focal point at the airport. She said: 'Thank you very, very much for remembering John and for loving John. I am delighted Liverpool has decided to honour John in this way. 'John always reminded of us of the sense of fun in life. I hope the airport will send a great message to all corners of the world. As John said there is no hell below us, above us only skies.' Ono added that the new name opened a host of possibilities for the airport, including a Strawberry Fields cafe or a Give Peace a Chance lounge. Airport owners Peel Holdings saw the move as a 'fitting and lasting tribute' to the murdered star. It said it had not included Sir Paul McCartney in the name because this kind of tribute tended to celebrate an entire life. But it revealed it had already had a message of support from Sir Paul. While in the city Ono was made a Doctor of Laws by the University of Liverpool in recognition of her work as a conceptual artist, and for the John Lennon Memorial Scholarship which she helped establish in 1991. In a ceremony at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, Yoko, 67, said: 'You have no idea what this means to me, for this is not any city, this is Liverpool. It is my husband John's birthplace and the place that he never stopped talking about all his life. He would have been very proud for me to be receiving this honour.' Ono is also reported to have made a personal plea to ensure that the childhood home of her late husband is purchased and preserved. The Mendips, on Menlove Avenue, Allerton, is to be put on the market and the National Trust has said it did not plan to preserve the home as it had done with the house where Paul McCartney grew up.

Paul McCartney to Help British Tourismadded 24th JunePaul McCartney will be featured in a £14m campaign to persuade tourists frightened of foot and mouth to return to Britain. Paul will be among celebrities including David Beckham, Gary Lineker, Sir Nigel Hawthorne and Hugh Grant taking part in a worldwide advertising campaign to be launched in August. The drive by the British Tourist Authority (BTA) to revive the tourism industry comes after it has suffered one of its worst declines because of foot and mouth disease. Many foreigners remain convinced humans can catch the disease and that the country is suffering food shortages. In April, just 719,000 people visited Britain, a 21% fall on last year.

Beatles First Manager Has Heart SurgeryTHE Beatles' first manager is in hospital recovering from life-saving open heart surgery.Allan Williams underwent a quadruple-heart bypass operation after being warned that, without surgery, his days were numbered. Williams managed the Fab Four in their early days before famously "giving them away" to Brian Epstein. After they parted, relations between Mr Williams and his former proteges became strained. In the '80s, he was involved in a legal tussle with Paul McCartney over the ownership of a pair of leather trousers, said to have once belonged to the star. Despite dire warnings from his doctors before his operation, Mr Williams refused to completely abandon his enjoyment of a drink. Speaking in April with a glass of malt in his hand, he said: "If I could not have a glass of Scotch, life would hardly be worth living. 'I am a bit dubious about this operation but they said I have got to have it so I suppose I have got to listen to them.' But he joked: 'In the meantime, the doctors have told me not to exert myself. They said not to try to run up any hills because it could prove fatal. 'But they need not have worried. I have no intention of running up any hills if I can help it.'

National Trust Not to Buy John's Childhood Homeadded 23rd JuneThe National Trust has denied that it plans to buy 'Mendips' - John Lennon's childhood home, despite buying Paul McCartney's. A spokesman for the National Trust said of Sir Paul's former family home, which it bought: "It is the place where Love Me Do and I Saw Her Standing There were written, and there are fantastic photographs of the group performing there. We have no intention to buy any of the other former homes of the Beatles, since they do not have the same significance."

Beatles Photos go on Display in New Yorkadded 23rd JuneBACK in the summer of 1968, budding Scottish photographer Tom Murray, 25, was given the chance of a lifetime, only he didn't know it at first. War photographer Don McCullum invited him to tag along on a promotional photo shoot for a band. McCullum didn't say who the subject was, but suggested Murray bring along his camera to get some 'nice snaps.' So Murray grabbed his Nikon F, two rolls of color film and jumped into his red 1960 Jaguar XK150. And the band turned out to be The Beatles. When he walked into a rehearsal studio set up in an old church, Murray says, 'I heard 'Lady Madonna' on the piano.' He thought it was some fan tinkering. Then he saw Paul McCartney and the rest of the legendary band, and Yoko Ono. He got to take part in a historic day - the last Beatles shoot open to invited photographers. From then on, the band hired its own photogs through its Apple label. Murray shot 30 frames, tossed seven and put the other 23 negatives in a drawer, where they lay forgotten for 20 years. Seven years ago, he finally dug out the negatives and had them appraised by Christie's - for $2.3 million. The collection of photos, which has become known as 'Summer of '68: A Mad Day,' are now being shown at the Pop International Gallery. Tom kindly gave my permission to use one of his photos on the cover of my book 'The Guide to the Beatles London. The Pop International Gallery is at 473 West Broadway, (212) 533-4262.

John Lennon Manuscript to be Auctionedadded 23rd Junea press release from Stanley Gibbons - An important John Lennon manuscript valued at £25,000 has gone on sale in London. The news of its appearance is sure to excite Beatles fans throughout the world. The unique two page hand written manuscript comes from Lennon's acclaimed 1965 stage production 'In His Own Write', a show based around the Beatle's surreal books of outrageous poems and skits. Amazingly, this particular manuscript contains the working draft of Lennon's scandalous parody of the Queen's Speech, a routine so outrageous that it was actually banned from the final production! This historic piece of classic Lennon wit is also decorated with original doodles by the Beatle - thus making it one of the most desirable items of Beatles memorabilia to have come on the market in recent years. Incredibly, the existence of this celebrated manuscript was already known to autograph collectors as it was mentioned by journalist Ray Coleman in his definitive biography 'Lennon'. The piece originally belonged to the comic actor Victor Spinetti, who played alongside Lennon in such films as 'A Hard Day's Night' and 'Help,' and Coleman's book describes Lennon writing the Queen's Speech out on "a piece of cardboard used to keep a shirt in place". Now, collectors the world over have a chance to own this extremely rare and desirable piece of Beatles history ..... For further details of this wonderful John Lennon manuscript, including photographs, please contact Poppy Collinson, Manager, Fraser's Autographs, 399 Strand, London WC2R 0LX, ENGLAND. Webmaster's note - In His Own Write opened in 1968 - not 1965 as stated in the press release

George Martin Launches Yesterday Transcript Auctionadded 14th JuneSir George Martin today launched the auction of the signed scores of Yesterday to raise money for the people of Montserrat. The producer wrote a string quartet accompaniment for Sir Paul McCartney's acoustic guitar part. 'When we first did it, Paul saw what I'd written and he noticed that his name wasn't on the score - you don't normally, I just wrote 'Yesterday' on the top,' he remembered. 'He said, 'Let me put my name on' and he put 'Paul McCartney' - and then he looked at me and wrote 'John Lennon' - and then added my name, 'George Martin Esquire'. 'Then he looked at me and smiled, and added 'and Mozart'. And that inscription is still there. 'It was the very first time a Beatle had ever sung by himself, and it was the very first time we had ever used instruments other than the four boys and myself. It is amazing to look back on it.' to go to the auction click here |

Mendips Goes up for SaleThe house where John Lennon spent his childhood is going up for sale on the Internet, the family of its late owner have said.Ernest Burkey, who lived in the house for 30 years, died last month at age 88. `I would prefer to see it bought by somebody who had a feeling for the Beatles,' his son, Rod Burkey, told Sky News. He did not say when or where the Internet ad would be posted. Lennon lived at 251 Menlove Avenue in the Liverpool suburb of Woolton from the age of five - when his parents separated and he went to live with his Aunt Mimi - until he was 23. Real estate agents quoted by Liverpool newspapers valued the house at about £150,000 but said it could fetch much more because of its history. Last year, the house was awarded a plaque from the English Heritage agency identifying its former resident. It attracts a steady stream of visitors. Mike Storey, leader of the Liverpool local government council, said Monday the city would be prepared to contribute to the cost of buying the house if partners could be found. The National Trust, a heritage organization, owns Paul McCartney's childhood home but has said it has no plans to buy the Lennon house.

Sir George Martin to Launch Auction of Signed Yesterday Score at HMV Storeadded May 31stSir George Martin, legendary Beatles producer, has enlisted the help of Sir Paul McCartney in an auction to raise money for the volcano-devastated island of Montserrat. At HMV's store in London on June 14, Martin will officially launch the worldwide auction of the first of 500 specially framed lithographs of the original 1965 score of Macca's Beatles classic 'Yesterday'. This first lithograph, one in a series of 500, is specially inscribed by composer Paul McCartney with the message "Congratulations you're Number 1". The aim of the auction, organised with web giants Yahoo!, is to raise much-needed funds for The Sir George Martin Music Foundation to aid the island of Montserrat, devastated in June 1997 when the Soufriere Hills Volcano erupted killing 19 people. June 14 has been chosen for the launch as on this day, 36 years ago, the original recording was made of Yesterday at Abbey Road studios: the string quartet, for whom the auction score was written, was added three days later. Sir George has highlighted the uniqueness of the auction items for Beatles fanatics: "'Yesterday' is not only a beautiful song but it has a number of 'firsts' attached to it: it was the first time that any Beatle recorded without any of the other four members of the band; it was the first score written for a Beatles song and it was the first time anyone other than the four Beatles or their producer played on a record, in this case a string quartet; it is the most performed song in history and its appeal continues to be as strong as ever." The first lithograph and a portion of the limited editions of the 'Yesterday' lithographs, newly signed by Sir Paul McCartney and Sir George Martin, will be auctioned from June 14 with the remaining numbers in the series auctioned at a later date. Each lithograph is virtually identical to the original, and is offered in a double-sided frame of burr ash and walnut, specially designed by David Linley, the Queen's nephew. Sir George is close to the Caribbean Montserrat islanders, having built an outpost of Air Studios there in 1979. It was destroyed by the 1989 Hurricane Hugo. When the island's volcano erupted in 1997, Sir George organised a star-studded concert in London featuring artists who had been associated with Air Montserrat. The likes of Paul McCartney, Sting, Elton John, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler raised over one million dollars to benefit Montserrat. Sir George Martin continues: "I'm very grateful to Paul McCartney for helping me to produce these wonderful lithographs and hope that they will excite a feverish bidding frenzy! All funds will be going to the people of Montserrat, the majority of which will be used to build an education and cultural centre. "The need, some four years later, for aid to the islanders for the rebuilding of their lives and reconstruction of their land following such devastation is as great as ever. So I had the idea of the 'Yesterday' lithographs and hope that with the help of Yahoo and HMV we will raise a great deal of money." The online auction for the first lithograph will start on the June 14 and run for two weeks across the Yahoo! Network's US, Canada, Japan, Singapore, German, French and Danish sites. This will be followed by the auction of 200 lithographs split between yahoo.co.uk/auctions and yahoo.com/auctions. HMVOxford Street, London, will have an in-store display of the number one lithograph and chart the progress of the online bidding.

All You Need is....A Vomit Bucketadded May 30thThe new London musical All You Need is Love opened in London last night - and received the worst review I have ever seen. The show is basically 12 people singing Lennon/McCartney songs badly. That's it. No story at all - just very strange arrangements of Beatles songs with even stranger choreography and staging. I saw the show in Richmond a few weeks ago with fellow beatlesnewser Jo Madge. We walked out half way through. I put off writing about it until now just in case it improved before the first night - I needn't have bothered. Rachel Halliburton in The London Evening Standard headlined her review ' Beatle Crushers'. It went on 'A musical massacre took place last night, with style and talent suffering a major defeat at the hands of the vapid and synthetic. The revolutionary power of John Lennon and Paul McCartney's works was annihilated by a production which brings to mind first a record-shop bargain bucket and then a vomit bucket: misconceived, sentimental, and badly designed, it is the worst of the entertainment genre best described as coach party fodder. Now go on Rachel - you like it really. Well, normally I disagree with critics but on this occasion I have to agree. I REALY wanted the show to be good - the West End needs a good Beatles show - but this is not it. In fact I find it hard to see how it could be worse. I think the worst moments for me was Yellow Submarine, which had an arrangement you would not believe. Another cringe worthy moment, amongst many, was when the cast all crossed themselves when singing 'mother Mary comes to me' during Let it Be. I can only hope with lots of good new shows opening and lower audiences due to the foot and mouth outbreak that the show will die very quickly - and put everyone out of their misery.

Wingspan Book to be Publishedadded May 23rdPAUL McCARTNEY will follow the recent release of his `Wingspan' TV film and album with a `Wingspan' book that will publish for the first time the never-seen backstage rock photography of his late wife Linda. WINGSPAN, the 40 song double CD from Paul McCartney and Wings, entered the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at #2, making it the highest debut album that week and fastest selling post-Beatles album of McCartney's career. The album remains in the Billboard Album Chart Top 10 in its second week. Just as the Beatles carved up their `Anthology' project into a TV documentary, albums and hefty autobiography, Paul is to follow suit with his acclaimed Wings retrospective. The `Wingspan' biography will be centered around Linda McCartney's pictures from her "lost decade," the Seventies years during which Linda stopped her career as a photographer in order to play keyboards in her husband's band, Wings. Prior to Wings, Linda McCartney established herself as rock and roll's foremost female photographer. In the Sixties, as Linda Eastman, she photographed all the legends of rock - including The Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and The Beatles. A collection of her pictures from the time - `Sixties; Portrait Of An Era' - was published in 1992 and became an international best-seller, with more than 200,000 copies sold. Before her death in 1998, Linda McCartney said: "Playing in a band totally stopped me from being a working photographer, my career just stopped. Before that I was taking pictures for all sorts of magazines and was working on photographs for a book about rock and roll. But it stopped because I joined a band and all the time that I was in that band was time that I would have been taking photographs." "Photography was more important to me than music - but my husband and my family were more important to me than photography, and I was prepared to give up photography for them." But now it will be revealed that Linda didn't stop taking her rock-pop pictures. Although playing in Wings stopped her working as a photographer, in private throughout the Seventies she continued to record the rock and roll way of life. Now these never-seen pictures will be published later this year in a `Wingspan' biography - along with text by Paul McCartney that will be more detailed and revealing than his interview for the `Wingspan' TV documentary. Said Paul McCartney: "Because of her perception, Linda could see the way you are inside, beyond the act or the image, and it was that honest reality that she photographed. Linda had an eye for honesty, she saw the truth and that shines through all of the images that she produced. Her pictures are all very natural, nothing was posed".

Another Beatles Concert Venue in Dangeradded 23rd MayA row has erupted over plans to demolish a building where the Beatles were once famously booed off stage. The Scottish Civic Trust is concerned at plans to build flats on the site of the Museum Hall in Bridge of Allan, Stirlingshire. The Beatles played at the venue on 5th January 1963. They were billed as the 'Love Me Do boys in a newspaper ad - tickets cost five shillings. The Trust's Jane Nelson, said: 'The land is more valuable than the building and this has paved the way for it to be knocked down.'

Paul Still Mad About Yesterdayadded May 18thPaul is still going on about wanting Yoko to change the songwriting credit for Yesterday `Yesterday,'' like most of the Beatle songs, was officially credited to McCartney and John Lennon. `At one point Yoko earned more from `Yesterday' than I did,' McCartney said in an interview published in Radio Times magazine. `It doesn't compute, especially when it's the only song that none of the Beatles had anything to do with. I asked as a favor if I could have my name before John's on the `Anthology' credits for `Yesterday,' and Yoko refused.' Wingspan Enters US Chart at Number Twoadded May 17NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--May 16, 2001--The recent success of the Beatles 1 CD left an indelible mark upon the musical landscape and undoubtedly introduced a new generation of fans to the Beatles. Now, hot on the heels of that accomplishment, comes word that WINGSPAN, the 40 song double CD from Paul McCartney and Wings, which chronicles the second chapter of Paul McCartney's musical journey, enters the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at No. 2, making it the highest debut album this week. WINGSPAN, which includes 17 hits that sold more than a million copies each, marks not only McCartney's biggest selling first week of the SoundScan era, but also the fastest selling release of the McCartney post-Beatles era. The album's phenomenal success comes on the heels of the highly anticipated, critically hailed ABC Television Special - `Wingspan,' which was seen by an estimated 15 million viewers this past Friday night, and an unprecedented media campaign which has seen massive print coverage and television support on ABC Network, as well as VHI and other nationally syndicated television programs. `Certainly, the extraordinary first week success of WINGSPAN underscores the timelessness and breadth of McCartney's contributions to contemporary pop music. That this circa 1970's - early `80s collection should strike a chord with today's audience is a distinguished accomplishment, and an apt follow up to the multi-platinum Beatles 1 CD,'' says Capitol Records President & CEO, Andrew Slater. WINGSPAN, clocking in with 151 minutes of music on two CDs (disc one is conceptually titled Hits and disc two is History), emerges as the soundtrack of a simple, back-to-basics band's evolution into one of the biggest-selling acts of the rock era. In a span of nine years, Wings soared to international success with five No. 1 albums and eventually a USA stadium show that broke the Beatles' attendance record. Among the 40 tracks are 17 hits that were certified Platinum in America and England, including `Maybe I'm Amazed,' `Live And Let Die,' `My Love,' `Band On The Run,' `Listen To What The Man Said,' `Silly Love Songs,' `With A Little Luck', and `Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.' As a bonus, the double-CD package is being marketed to sell for the price of a single album. The advent of music of two-to-three decade vintage debuting at No. 2 is a phenomenon reserved for very few popular artists indeed -- just another one in the many accomplishments of Paul McCartney. Check out the official Paul McCartney and Wings website at http://paulmccartney.com where you can send a Wings player to a friend that contains a track-by-track commentary by Paul McCartney, a video medley, downloads and more.

Limited Edition of Autographed 'Yesterday' Scores to Raise Funds for Montserratadded May 17thThis received from Bob Hieronimus, Ph.D Sir George Martin did not receive his knighthood simply for serving in the legitimate capacity of "the Fifth Beatle" or for producing all the Beatles hits. Almost as legendary are Sir George's generous spirit and philanthropic nature. After the volcanic explosions of 1995 completely destroyed Martin's home on Montserrat, along with over half of the rest of the island, he has been working ceaselessly to bring comfort and aid to the surviving community. In 1997 the world rallied to his cause of assisting the volcano-devastated island of Montserrat where Sir George's AIR studios once recorded such luminaries as Paul McCartney, Sting, Stevie Wonder and Eric Clapton by producing a "rock royalty" concert at the Royal Albert Hall featuring all these and many more. Hieronimus & Co. assisted with donations and by organizing a simultaneous memorabilia sale and fundraiser at our local Baltimore Hard Rock Cafe. When we heard another fundraiser was being planned we asked Sir George for the details, and he supplied the following news which will excite all Beatlefans. Sir George Martin wrote the introduction to my book about the making of the film, The Beatles Yellow Submarine, which will be published by Krause Publications early next year. For more information on the Yellow Submarine book, please visit http:// www.21stCenturyRadio.com/yellowsubmarine.html Dear Bob & Zoh, "Thank you for your fax. You are kind to think of our fund raising efforts for Montserrat; I am sure you have done enough as it is. To raise the remainder needed to complete the Cultural Center which will be the focal point of the new town, I have cooked up a special scheme which I would like you to know about. I have organised an internet auction which takes place on June 14th 2001, in which Yahoo have collaborated and I persuaded Paul McCartney to work with me on the project. "Quite simply, I have arranged to have a limited edition of 490 perfect reproductions made of the original score that I wrote for string quartet for "Yesterday" framed by the fine British designer Viscount David Linley (he is Princess Margaret's son, but don't hold that against him!) The result is a stunning objet d'art. Paul and I have signed them all again recently as authentication, and the number one score is to be auctioned first, beginning 14th June, which you probably know will be the 36th anniversary of the recording. Bids are assessed for a two week period, at the end of which the highest bid receives this special piece of memorabilia. A few days later we have the same process, but this time the remaining 489 copies are put up for sale and after another two weeks the top 489 bids win the last of the series. That's it folks! No more. It is a one-off. I hope and expect that we will raise a million dollars, and I have set up a special foundation for it. "It happily runs along with the issue on July 3rd of retrospective collection of CDs of my productions over the past fifty years. Rather a bizarre lot as it includes a vast variety of works - over 150 titles ranging from classical folk, jazz and pop recordings, comedy, spoken word and even children's stuff. It is lovely for me, but I am not sure who will buy the six-pack set. Nevertheless, EMI are setting up a special web site for it and expect it to sell. "God Bless! George"

In the CD the ex-entrepreneur, described by Sir Paul McCartney in The Beatles Anthology as 'a great guy, a really good motivator', tells how the boys learned their trade abroad. The launch of the CD, available over the internet on http:// www.bandline.net, coincides with this year's Mathew Street Festival which is expected to attract some 300,000 music-lovers to Liverpool.

I do fancy that actually,' he told Reuters. McCartney, who has a new studio album coming out in September, said: 'I think it is very likely that I might tour around then. I like to go out on the road with a new album and I'm very excited by this one.' 'I've been recording it in the States and we recorded 18 tracks in just two weeks. Recording new songs makes you enthuse and want to get out and play them.' Paul said in the interview we will tour with the young musicians who played on the album - and not reform Wings. 'You can't reform Wings for the same reason that you can't reform The Beatles, because a very important member of each band wouldn't be there. With the Beatles, it is John and with Wings it is Linda.' added 8th May This from http://www.paulmccartney.com Paul To Tour? (Thought that would make you sit up...) Star's Beatles Collection to be Auctionedadded April 28thA 'world famous' pop star is to sell off a large collection of pop memorabilia, which includes the plans to the studio built for the recording of John Lennon's Imagine. Rumours were rife that the seller could be Sir Paul McCartney, as many of the other items in the 1,200-strong collection to go under the hammer at a Kent auction house have Beatles' connections, but that has been categorically denied. Raj Bisram, co-director of Cranbrook Auction Rooms, said he had been 'sworn to secrecy' by his famous client but said that he was in the music industry and lived in Sussex. A total of 75 items are to be sold in the first auction, with others to follow throughout the year, including an original John Lennon guitar and airline tickets from the Fab Four's last tour. The plans for Tittenhurst Hall, in Ascot, where the Imagine album was recorded, are expected to fetch between £15,000 and £20,000 in he first sale on May 5. The recording studio has since been removed from the hall. Another rare item is a signed Christmas card from Brian Epstein.

Paul on Charlie Rose - A Full Reportadded April 28thHere is a report of Paul on the Charlie Rose Show by our good friend Frank Branchini On stage there was a podium with the logo of the 92nd Street Y, a coffee table with chairs on either side. Hanging over the stage was 92 St Y banner. Before the lights dimmed an attractive blonde came out from behind the stage and sat in the audience creating quite a stir. I assume it must have been Heather, but I couldn't tell from where we were. The director of adult education programs at the Y laid down the ground rules (turn off cell phones and pagers, no taking of photos) and introduced Charlie Rose who introduced Paul McCartney. People snapped photos throughout the evening with the staff of the Y being pretty aggressive about trying to stop them. McCartney began by spending about thirty minutes reading poetry. He introduced each poem with a story about what prompted him to compose it. He was very charming, and very focused. What he said was often very moving. There were poems about Ivan Vaughan, John Lennon, and Linda. I immediately had a sense that we were privileged to be a part of an extremely special event. This is only the second time that Paul McCartney has read poetry in public. And we were there. And it was happening in New York City which was a very special place to both John Lennon and Linda McCartney, as Paul reminded us. Paul related that he and Ivan Vaughan were mates because they shared the same birthday. It was Vaughan that introduced Paul to John Lennon. Paul |
